Why X-17?
Explaining the meaning behind our name...
At 21:51 UT, on Monday 2 April 2001, an active region of the sun unleashed a major solar flare.
The strength and power of this flare was classified as X-17, which appears to be the biggest solar flare on record to date. The big explosion that took place near the Sun's northwest limb hurled a coronal mass ejection into space at a speed of roughly 7.2 million km/h.
This flare produced a powerful geomagnetic storm that raged for more than 24 hours, dazzling sky watchers on Earth who saw the aurora borealis (northern lights) as far south as Mexico.
The power of the sun is the basis for developing a natural tan. So with this in mind, we decided to use the name X-17 as it is the ultimate definition of the sun's power.
